  • To carve a volume into the void of darkness

    The nocturnal sound is a reminder of human solitude and mortality, and it makes one conscious of the entire slumbering city. Anyone who has become entranced by the sound of dripping water in the darkness of a ruin can attest to the extraordinary capacity of the ear to carve a volume into the void of darkness. The space traced by the ear in the darkness becomes a cavity sculpted directly in the interior of the mind.

  • I love to be alone

    I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.

    Henry David Thoreau, Walden

  • The cubicle

    The cubicle had the effect of putting people close enough to each other to create serious social annoyances, but dividing them so that they didn’t actually feel that they were working together. It had all the hazards of privacy and sociability but the benefits of neither. It got so bad that nobody wanted them taken away; even those three walls offered some kind of psychological home, a place one could call one’s own. All these factors could deepen the frenzied solitude of an office worker.

  • Somebody is living on this beach

    Once, I had a dream of fame.
    Generally, even then I was lonely.
    To the castle, a sign must have said.
    Somebody is living on this beach.

  • Words which are things

    I have not loved the world, nor the world me;
    I have not flattered its rank breath, nor bowed
    To its idolatries a patient knee,—
    Nor coined my cheek to smiles, nor cried aloud
    In worship of an echo; in the crowd
    They could not deem me one of such; I stood
    Among them, but not of them; in a shroud
    Of thoughts which were not their thoughts, and still could,
    Had I not filed my mind, which thus itself subdued.

    I have not loved the world, nor the world me,—
    But let us part fair foes; I do believe,
    Though I have found them not, that there may be
    Words which are things,—hopes which will not deceive,
    And virtues which are merciful, nor weave
    Snares for the falling: I would also deem
    O'er others' griefs that some sincerely grieve;
    That two, or one, are almost what they seem,—
    That goodness is no name, and happiness no dream.

    Lord Byron, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage

    A mountain village
    Where there is not even hope

    If not for the loneliness,
    How painful life here would be.

    There are no shortcuts to the investment of time and care in friendship and human bonding, and it is fraudulent to pretend otherwise. When human loneliness becomes a source of income for others through devices, we'd better stop and think a bit about the place of human needs in the real world of technology.
